“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creation: old things are passed away; behold all things are become new – 2 Corinthians 5:17

Some people interpret the portion of scripture that says “As it is written, there is none righteous, no, not one” (Romans 3:10), to mean all men are not righteous. But the Lord Jesus came into this world in order to make a righteous creation out of the unrighteous man. He died once, so that every man who hitherto was unrighteous could believe in Him and become righteous. In other words, the statement, “no one is righteous” is of the past (the time you were not yet born again); it doesn’t apply anymore after you accepted Christ as Lord and Savior, because God has given you the gift of righteousness (Romans 5:17), that qualifies you to be a righteous person and this gift has nothing to do with what you do (wrong or right).

The death and the resurrection of Jesus freed the whole world from the bondage of sin and death. Therefore, if you’re born again, you’re no longer a sinner but a saint. In his epistle to the Philippians, the Apostle Paul addressed the saints in Philippi, for example, as “…the saints of Christ Jesus which are at Philippi…” (Philippians 1:1). Thus the death of Jesus Christ not only made us free from sin, but made us saints as well! It has brought us into a new life of righteousness.

Now, the nature you have as a believer in Christ is the nature to do right, for righteousness produces in you rightness-excellence, precision, exactness, perfection and flawlessness of God. Your lifestyle ought to reflect the righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost.

Before His death on the cross, Jesus declared that it was finished (John 19:30). In essence, He meant the troubles, toiling and turmoil that plagued humanity had been brought to an end. The fruitless journey of seeking to be righteous by your own good works has ended. With the gift of righteousness bequeathed to us through His death, an intimate relationship with the Father is now guaranteed. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says, “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”

Blessed heavenly Father, I thank you for your wonderful gift of righteousness which has given me right standing with you, and brought me into the glorious liberty of the sons of God.
