“…truly our fellowship is with Father and with His Son Jesus Christ”. – 1John 1:3

Have you ever heard someone say that when you do something wrong, you “break fellowship” with God? Such teaching claims that though your sonship is not affected, you’re not in fellowship with God until you settle your scores with Him. They got this idea because of their own human experiences.

You didn’t achieve or come into fellowship with the Father because of your righteousness; it came because He gave you His righteousness. How could then your righteousness sustain it? The truth is, your fellowship with the Father is not and can never be affected because of what you did or didn’t do. He already knew you couldn’t make it on your own, which is the reason He made allowance for your errors by making it possible for you to receive forgiveness: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1John 1:9).

Never think of God as a Father who holds on to “issues” with His kids, ready to consume them with fire for doing something wrong. The Father’s love for you is too strong and immeasurable for Him to break fellowship with you because you did something wrong. Jesus said, “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever (John 14:16). God the Father, through the Holy Spirit abides with you forever, not sometimes. Also in Matthew 28:20, Jesus didn’t say, “I will break fellowship with you when you do something wrong”. He said, “…lo, I am with you always” (Hebrews 13:5; John 10:28). Therefore, when you err, He maintains fellowship with you and guides you unto repentance, if He broke fellowship with you, you could never return; but that can only happen when you completely reject Him as your Lord and Savior (Hebrews 6:4-6; Matthew 10:33).

Become persuaded that God loves you more than life, therefore “neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come. Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39).
