But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. – James 1:22
James explains what it means for one to deceive his own self: it means to be a hearer of the Word, but not a doer of what it says. To hear God’s Word and not do what it says is behaving like a man who looks at his face in the mirror and immediately forgets what he looks like once he turns away. Sadly, some Christians have gotten stuck in a rut because they deceive themselves this way – they hear the Word, but don’t do it, thus they keep turning around in circles.
Imagine a guy who knows that the scripture says; to not worry about anything (Philippians 4:6), yet he says “I’m worried what’s gonna happen if I don’t get this job or the money” or the scripture that says, I am with you always (Matthew 28:20), and I will never leave nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5), yet he says, “Where is God, no one’s helping me, I’m all alone”. He’s deceiving himself for not doing what the Word says. Dare to believe and trust the Word. God never lied!
Doing the Word is the secret of success. Jesus likened the man who hears the Word and puts it to work to a wise man: “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.” (Matthew 7:24-25).
To hear God’s Word or to know the scriptures and not do what it says is like shooting one’s self in the foot. Jesus likened such a man to a foolish man: “And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it” (Matthew 7:26-27). Don’t just be a hearer of the Word.
Make up your mind to be a doer of the Word! That’s where the blessing is: “But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty (the Word), and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed” (James 1:25). God’s Word is what you need to be all that God has destined you to be, so be a doer of the Word and not a hearer only; don’t deceive yourself!
